Write a SHORT STORY with mentoring help

Compared to writing a 100,000 word novel, writing a short story appears to be simple because of its brevity. As many people have found, for the very reason that it is short, the short story is a very exacting genre with some specific  requirements  you need to meet to write an excellent one. Writing a book can sometimes be simpler.

What exactly is a short story and what is considered the minimum and maximum length? Those questions could almost start a fist fight among short story writing aficionados. Some of the long-held definitions of short stories, such as Edgar Alan Poe's dictum:  'able to be read in a single sitting' have been overturned. There seems to be general agreement that the lower limit is 1000 words (and then we get the short short and flash story categories) and the jury is still out on whether the upper limit is 4000, 7500, 10,000 or even 20,000.  If you are writing a short story,  a good summary of the genre can be found in Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_story

To complicate matters, there are slightly different expectations or requirements for different genres of sh0rt stories - sci-fi publishers require certain elements that are not required by a romance publisher and vice versa.
